Areas of Learning and Experience

Expressive Arts

In Tonnau Primary School our vision for the Expressive Arts will inspire our learners to fulfil the four purposes.  By exploring creative forms and subject disciplines, both in their own work and that of others, learners will use their imagination, experiences and talents to express themselves creatively. Learners will develop a respect and deeper understanding of the world of the arts through informed analysis, reflecting on and responding to a range of stimuli. They will make connections between the interdisciplinary skills and knowledge to create ambitious, original and innovative pieces inspired by the world around them. Learners will develop a growing understanding of their own cultural identity as people in Wales, and that of other people, places and times.

Health and Well-being

In Tonnau Primary School our vision for Health and Well-being will inspire our learners to fulfil the four purposes. Through taking part in physical activity and learning about the benefits of a balanced diet and exercise, learners will be encouraged to make positive choices to become healthy, confident individuals. Learners will be equipped with strategies in order to help regulate their emotions and maintain good physical, mental and emotional well-being. Learners will develop resilience, perseverance and personal effectiveness to inspire them to be motivated, ambitious and able to overcome any challenges that they may face. Positive behaviour and empathy is modelled and encouraged and our school values are embedded, helping learners to make connections with and develop positive relationships with others. Knowledge and understanding of our local community, Wales, the wider world and of their own and other’s culture is nurtured, therefore enabling learners to make positive contributions and become ethical members of society.

Science and Technology

In Tonnau Primary school our vision for Science and Technology will inspire our learners to fulfill the four purposes through curiosity and enquiry, helping them to make confident informed decisions based on previous experiences and existing knowledge to form their own theories and opinions. They will be considerate of the impact of their actions in their community, in Wales and the wider world, developing responsibility through understanding of local and international issues in their goal towards being ethical, informed citizens. Learners will strive through design and innovative engineering opportunities to become creative and enterprising problem solvers. Respect for all living things will be nurtured through understanding the diversity of all living things on the planet and what they need to survive, fostering a collective ethos of responsibility. Knowledge of the universe will drive curiosity and ambition to learn about forces, energy and reactions. Learners will be equipped for 21st Century living and working through computational problem solving and understanding the digital world in an ethical and informed way.

Mathematics and Numeracy

In Tonnau Primary our vision for Mathematics and Numeracy will inspire our learners to fulfil the four purposes through developing deep conceptual understanding of numbers and number systems. They will be able to transfer these skills to a range of different situations and settings, making connections and helping them to become ambitious, capable learners. Learners will develop confidence in their use of mathematics through how symbols can represent abstract ideas, supporting them to communicate effectively across authentic contexts and in other AoLEs. Through increased fluency in mathematics, learners will apply their skills and knowledge to solve a range of problems, using logical reasoning to explain their thought processes, justifying their conclusions confidently. The development of independence in mathematics and numeracy will help learners to apply their skills across all aspects of their daily lives.

Languages, Literacy and Communication

In Tonnau Primary School learning about Languages, Literacy and Communication will inspire our learners to fulfil the four purposes through making connections between their home language and other world languages, helping them to become both ambitious, capable learners and ethically informed citizens. Learners will develop their ability to listen to, read and interpret a range of relevant media, forms and genres, to enable them to make sense of Wales and the wider world in a respectful, informed way. Learners will be supported to use a range of languages to express themselves purposefully using an appropriate form of communication. Through exploration of ambitious ideas, vocabulary and viewpoints, learners will develop an understanding of how to apply communication skills in a bilingual and multilingual context. Learners will engage with literature from a variety of cultures, that fires the imagination and sparks a lifelong love of literary experiences. Through these, a greater understanding and empathy for their own heritage and culture, and that of others around the world, will develop, whilst contributing to their own emotional and mental well-being.

Humanities

In Tonnau Primary learning about the Humanities will inspire our learners to fulfil the four purposes through developing enquiring minds that can show an awareness of our world, now and in the past. Learners will form their own informed viewpoints and recognise those of others, helping them to become healthy, confident individuals. They will discover the natural world, engaging with current issues such as global warming and impacts on the environment and how their actions can influence this, developing their sense of heritage and cynefin, knowing their place in their community and the wider world. Learners will understand and celebrate diversity and change, showing acceptance of all cultures and communities to become ethically informed citizens.
